Irukandji

Irukandji

Charlie's Games has released it's latest shooter.  This time its a score attack shooter by the name of Irukandji.  The shooter has an underwater theme and the name itself refers to a rather venomous form of jellyfish.

Now, what does Charlie's latest marvel have going for it?  Well, the graphics are top notch, the bullet patterns are hypnotizing, controls are spot on, music is excellent, and it has a giant crab boss..  any of these fine points should already have you flooding his server with requests for the demo.

Now, being a score attack shooter, it does have some limitations.  First and foremost it is only one level long.  This is offset somewhat because it does throw some variety into the mix.  You can unlock six ships to play with and it comes with a full online leaderboard for each ship.  There are also a total of ten achievements to unlock.

Charlie clarified a bit about the score attack structure over on the2bears:  A new power-up appears for every fifty enemies killed.  Once the ship is fully powered up, each of the bonuses you collect will increase your multiplier.

Controls are simple, but I do find that this is one game where the keyboard is king.  The joypad was just too slow on some of the nastier bullet patterns.  Keyboard controls are [Z] Fire towards left, [X] Fire towards right, [Z] and [X] held together fire straight, [C] Fires your ClusterF*ck missles.. ok, it doesn't really say that.. but thats what it does. ;-)

He is asking for a minimum of $1 [USD] for the game, which is really a steal for a shooter of this quality.  Do right by him and send him a few more bones if you are able.  After all, there really aren't too many developers working in this genre anymore... and we like to keep the ones we have.

Also, when you buy the full version you will get the Windows, Mac and Linux versions.  I've only tried the Windows so far but I'm getting ready to fire up the linux port... as for Mac... well, I'm allergic to apples. ;-)

Astro Tripper

AstroTripper

AstroTripper

I'm a bit of a shmup's nut.  So I was happy to finally get my mitts on the new version of Space Tripper which is now called Astro Tripper from PomPom Games.

Game-play takes place on various platforms and your movement on these platforms is very free-form.  Enemies spawn from various locations on the level and you must fly around and zap them without getting hit or falling off of the platform.  Two forms of shots are available to you- Blue shots are concentrated and will take care of anything directly in front of you.  While Red shots are less powerful but fire in a spread pattern which is great for when you are being attacked from all sides.

The game is available for both PlayStation 3 and PC (Win).   Personally, I played the Windows version and had a blast.  Well worth $15 (USD) if you are a fan of twitch gaming.

Apple Lode Runner: The Remake.

Apple Lode Runner: The Remake

I recently received a copy of Spoonbill Software's remake of the Apple ][ version of Lode Runner.  This version, however, is for Microsoft's Windows platforms and was coded by Ian R. Humphreys using Borland Delphi.  By the way, I have not tried to install this under WINE on my Linux box yet, but I will post the results when I do.

Now I admit it, I played the heck out of Lode Runner in my day, albeit on the Commodore 64 rather than Apple ][, and this version stacks up quite nicely to the original.   Controls are completely keyboard based- using the arrow keys to move and the [Z] and [X] keys to dissolve blocks to the left and right of your character respectively.  It would be nice to have a gamepad option but that's not currently a part of the base package.  You could probably use a program such as Joy2Key, but I have not tried that yet.

The game plays faithfully to the original.  You play a character running through the levels trying to collect all of the gold without being caught by one of the baddies.  You can dissolve the floor to the left or the right of your character, which can be used to temporarily trap one of the baddies, allowing you to walk over him.. or you can dissolve the floor and drop through to a lower level of the map.  Once all of the gold in a level is collected, a ladder appears at the top of the screen which will allow you to climb up to the next level.

The game also includes a level editor which is much easier to use than the one supplied with the original game by Brøderbund Software.  In addition to the game and map editor, you also receive the complete Original and Championship maps from the Apple version, all C64 maps and a bunch of fan made maps by the author and others... in total you get 5,750 levels as of update v1.0h.

The game is completely free... but Ian doesn't like to post download links for his products.. instead, he asks that you send him an email request for the game and he will then email it to you as an attachment.  You can find out more about this at his site.

This game comes _highly_ recommended to anyone who played this game in their youth, or to those that want to see what all of the hubbub is about.

Great job Ian!  Thanks for bringing back the memories.

PlanetChip.net is back online.

After what seems like a small eternity, I managed to get my personal blog back online.  Recently I've been putting most of my online efforts into getting my other sites such as ArcadeOasis.net and Shmuptacular.com updated.  The former site being my new community site for fans of classic arcade games.  That was a time consuming project, but it includes Online Games, Message Forums, Chat Rooms and an Image Gallery.  Good fun for anyone interested in the topic.

As far as this site goes, it's still a bit crunchy at this point.. I'll iron everything out within the next week or so.  I've got a fair amount of work ahead of me to hammer the theme into shape and, of course, I need to flesh out things on the content side as well.  All in good time.
